Giving Senior Dogs in Winnipeg the Second Chance They Deserve
Older, abandoned dogs can face an uphill battle finding a home - but this Winnipeg rescue makes sure their final chapter is filled with care, compassion, and love.
Older and abandoned dogs can face an uphill battle when it comes to finding a loving home. Age, medical conditions, behavioural challenges and changing family circumstances can make senior dogs some of the most difficult animals for rescues to place.
Before the Bridge Senior K9 Rescue is working to change that.
Based in Manitoba and supported by a dedicated network of foster homes and volunteers, Before the Bridge helps senior dogs and dogs with more complex needs find safety, care and, whenever possible, a loving forever home.
The rescue takes in dogs who are too often overlooked - the old, the sick, the medically complex, the behaviourally complex, the forgotten and the abandoned. Each dog is given the individualized care they need to prepare for the next chapter of their life.
A Second Chance for Senior and Special-Needs Dogs

For many dogs arriving at Before the Bridge, their journey has not been easy.
Some require veterinary treatment. Others need time to decompress, rebuild trust or adjust to living in a home again. Senior dogs may also need medications, specialized diets or additional support as they age.
Rather than defining these dogs by what they have been through, Before the Bridge focuses on what comes next.
The goal is to provide each dog with the medical care, stability, patience and compassion they need while searching for the right adoptive home.
For some dogs, that may mean a quiet home where they can enjoy their retirement years. For others, it means finding a family willing to understand their unique medical or behavioural needs.
Whatever their story, every dog deserves the opportunity to feel safe and loved.
Why Foster a Senior Dog?

Foster volunteer Nicole McLeary became involved with rescue after the loss of her own senior dog.
“I decided that I wanted to get involved in fostering, and the rest is history.”
— Nicole McLeary, foster volunteer
Five years and more than twenty foster dogs later, Nicole describes fostering as one of the most rewarding things she has ever done.
Foster homes are an essential part of senior dog rescue. Instead of remaining in a kennel environment, dogs are able to live in a home while waiting for adoption. This gives them an opportunity to relax, establish routines and show their personalities.
It also helps the rescue learn important information about each dog, including how they interact with people, other pets and everyday household life.
For senior dogs in particular, a comfortable foster home can make an enormous difference.
Senior Dogs Have So Much Love to Give

People sometimes hesitate to adopt an older dog because they worry about age, health concerns or how much time they may have together.
But senior dogs can make wonderful companions.
Many are past the high-energy puppy stage and are perfectly happy enjoying a slower pace of life. They may prefer a comfortable couch, a leisurely walk around the neighbourhood or simply being close to their person.
“They're relaxed. They don't need a ten-mile walk. They're usually not interested in destroying the couch. They're often happiest sitting beside you while you watch a show, work around the house or spend an afternoon in the garden.”
— Nicole McLeary, foster volunteer
For the right person or family, adopting a senior dog can be an incredibly meaningful experience.
The Reward of Giving a Senior Dog a Home
“You're the light of their life, and it's just so unbelievably rewarding.”
— Nicole McLeary, foster volunteer
Every foster dog leaves behind a story.
Some stay for a short time before finding their forever family. Others need additional patience and support before they are ready for adoption. Each experience is different, but watching a foster dog leave for a loving home is one of the moments that makes rescue work worthwhile.
For volunteers like Nicole, saying goodbye can be emotional - but it also means there is now space to help another dog who needs somewhere safe to land.
That's how fostering creates a ripple effect: one available foster home can help dog after dog find their way toward a better future.
Adopt a Senior Dog in Winnipeg and Manitoba

If you're thinking about adding a dog to your family, consider opening your home to a senior.
Senior dogs can be loving, loyal and deeply appreciative companions. Many already understand household routines and simply want somewhere comfortable to call home.
Before the Bridge works to match adoptable dogs with homes suited to their individual personalities, health needs and lifestyles.
Adoption isn't simply about finding any available home. It's about finding the right home where each dog has the best opportunity to thrive.
Foster Homes Make Senior Dog Rescue Possible
Like many foster-based dog rescues in Manitoba, Before the Bridge depends on people willing to temporarily open their homes to dogs in need.
Every additional foster home increases the rescue's ability to help another dog.
Fosters provide a safe place to stay, daily care, companionship and important observations that help the rescue understand what type of permanent home will be best for the dog.
You don't necessarily need years of rescue experience to become involved. Support and guidance can be provided to help foster families understand the needs of the dog placed in their care.
You Don't Have to Foster to Make a Difference
Fostering is only one way to support Before the Bridge Senior K9 Rescue.
The organization also relies on volunteers, transporters, donors and community members who help spread the word.
As Nicole puts it:
“If you can't foster, volunteer. If you can't volunteer, donate. If you can't donate, share.”
— Nicole McLeary, foster volunteer
There are many behind-the-scenes jobs required to keep a dog rescue operating. Volunteers may help transport dogs to appointments, pick up donations, support fundraising events, assist with administrative tasks or help connect adoptable dogs with potential families.
Every contribution matters.
